Japanese 7 Spice Japanese 7 Spice

Japanese 7 spice is also known as togarashi shichimi in Japan. It is often used as a table condiment for seasoning noodles, rice, and soups. It can also be used for baked chicken, fish or vegetables. Black sesames are used for its distinctly smoky, peppery flavor, along with white sesames with their nutty mild flavor. The sansho is a mildly sweet dried red chile. The broken pieces of seaweed and tangerine zest sweeten this mixture as well as give it great color and texture.
